The Peloponnese Peninsula. A magical and diverse region with stunning nature combined with picturesque towns, breathtaking beaches, wonderful food, friendly people and endless places to explore. A trip to the Peloponnese is suitable throughout the year. The Peloponnese is located in the southern part of mainland Greece, and what separates it from the mainland is the Corinth Canal.

The Peloponnese Peninsula - How to get there and what to know?

Let me start by telling you about the area of the Peloponnese to give you some perspective on distances. The area of the Greek Peloponnese is 21,556 km², and basically the size of the Peloponnese is equivalent to the size of the entire state of Israel! What does this mean? That a drive from one side to the other can take 5 hours. The Peloponnese Peninsula is divided into seven different regions, and each region has its own character. This is a popular area for Greeks, who enjoy coming to vacation in the Peloponnese during their holidays.

So how do you get to the Peloponnese Peninsula?
Similar to getting to the Pelion Peninsula, the way to get there is by direct flight from Athens, then about an hour and 40-minute drive to the Corinth Canal, and from there within less than an hour you reach Nafplio, which is one of the most beautiful towns in the Peloponnese region and all of Greece (I’ll elaborate on it later in the article). From Athens to the Peloponnese Peninsula

We landed in Athens in the late evening and decided to head towards the Peloponnese Peninsula. Our first destination on the trip was 4 hours drive from Athens, so we spent our first night at a charming hotel located just a 50-minute drive from Athens, making it an excellent stopover for those arriving late and wanting to make some progress towards their first destination on a trip to the Peloponnese Peninsula. It’s worth noting that if you’re interested in touring Athens, you can also read about it on our website. Hotel Cokkinis is a three-star hotel with simple bedrooms and stunning sea views. The hotel is located right within the cliff, on the seashore. If you leave the balcony door open, you can hear the sounds of the sea. The rooms are clean and most include a balcony with sea views. The hotel accommodation includes a satisfying breakfast served at the table without a menu.

The Corinth Canal and wine tasting at a local winery

A 45-minute drive towards the famous Corinth Canal. You can save several minutes by taking the toll road, but we weren’t in a hurry to get anywhere so we preferred to drive the route close to the sea and enjoy the views as much as possible. The Corinth Canal is a waterway that connects the Saronic Gulf and the Gulf of Corinth. It shortens the distance between the Adriatic Sea and Piraeus port by about 320 km. The canal is very narrow and most cargo ships that could pass through it in the past cannot do so today. A stop to view the canal is highly recommended on your way to the Greek Peloponnese. The sight is very impressive.

After about half an hour of admiring the Corinth Canal, it was time to take advantage of the sunny weather in the Greek Peloponnese for wine tasting. There’s a famous local winery in the Nemea area, the Greek Tuscany. Nemea is a region surrounded by vineyards. Almost every family has its own winery where it produces local wine. In Nemea, vineyard cultivation has been going on for over 3,500 years.
We stopped for wine tasting at a famous winery located on the Peloponnese Peninsula called Palivou Estate, which has existed for many years. Since 1995 they stopped producing wine in the traditional way, and adapted themselves to the modern era.
Today the winery is one of two large wineries in the area with an area of about 100 dunams. The winery produces 350 thousand bottles of wine per year, and only about 15% of production is marketed to other countries. The type of grapes that characterizes this area from which they produce the wine is a variety called argiorgitiki.
You can do a one-hour tour at the winery including wine tasting and a small cheese platter, a tour of the vineyards and explanations about the place and the winemaking process. The price is 10 euros per person.

Acrocorinth

A short time after you cross the Corinth Canal, you can climb with your car in a few minutes to the impressive fortress of Acrocorinth. Note that it closes at three in the afternoon, but even if you missed it, besides the impressive ruins, there’s a beautiful view of the valley and it’s worth driving up to be impressed. This is one of the most important sites in Greece, it changed hands over the years and was thus well preserved. At its edge was the temple of Aphrodite, which with the change of hands went through revolutions itself and was in successive periods a church and even a mosque.

Trip in the Peloponnese: Sparta

If you’re coming for a trip to the Peloponnese and you’re archaeology enthusiasts, you can visit Sparta on the way to the Mani region. Of all the ancient sites we visited, we must admit this isn’t one of the impressive ones, and it mainly has ruins, but we enjoyed reading about the place, imagining what it was like in its heyday, imagining Gerard Butler shouting “THIS IS SPARTA” and seeing the view. We met a team of archaeologists and volunteers at the site who are digging and discovering the place in hopes that in the future the site will be more impressive. If you’re coming to the area, you can also pop in for a few minutes, it’s free.

Peloponnese: An impressive site called Mystras

Whether you slept in Mystras or the surrounding area or are just passing through, this is a must-see site! This is a city that was founded in the 13th century by French knights during the 4th Crusade, but quite quickly passed to the Byzantines. The city is super impressive, full of remains and churches and of course was included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. You can buy the ticket at the lower entrance and go all the way up, or alternatively go halfway and return to the car and then continue with it to the upper entrance and climb to the fortress ruins. The 360-degree view from there is simply mind-blowing.

Drive towards Gythio - the largest town in the Mani region

A 4-hour drive towards Gythio (Gytheio), this is the large town where we sleep for the next two nights. Gythio is a port town, and it’s the main town in the Mani region of the Peloponnese Peninsula. In Gythio you’ll find a large selection of hotels, restaurants and cafes. This is a beautiful town whose colorful houses are spread along the mountainside. You can walk along the long promenade along the harbor and overlook the city from the lighthouse area. If you’re lucky, you’ll see charming sea turtles in the water that love to lay their eggs on the nearby beach.

Peloponnese: Where to sleep in Gythio?
Hotel Las is a beautiful 5-star hotel in the center of town. The hotel has large and spacious bedrooms, some facing the sea and some with city views. The hotel has a lovely rooftop pool with a bar open until the early hours of the morning and offers an excellent food menu and amazing atmosphere with a 360-degree view of the city. The hotel breakfast is varied and includes everything you need to enjoy a good breakfast, which is basically fresh Greek pastry and good coffee 🙂

The most beautiful towns in Mani - Peloponnese

A 45-minute drive from Gythio and you reach one of the most picturesque places in the Mani region. Meet Limeni. This is a beautiful bay with amazing stone houses sitting on the magical seashore.
Limeni is one of those places that if you visit once, you definitely won’t forget it. This is a tiny bay with a beautiful harbor that leaves visitors open-mouthed.
The village isn’t large and you can stroll leisurely along its beautiful alleys. There isn’t an organized beach in the area but every few meters you can find stairs leading straight into the water, so it’s highly recommended to bring a swimsuit with you in your bag and jump into the crystal-clear sea. Don’t be surprised if during your swim you encounter sea turtles. Limeni is a natural breeding ground for sea turtles, and if you’re lucky, you’ll undoubtedly enjoy an amazing and rather sweet spectacle!

Peloponnese: Where to eat in Limeni?

A nice place for coffee and snacks – Teloneio. This is a coffee shop right on the water, with stunning views of the town and sea and a great freddo cappuccino (Greek iced coffee).
Recommended restaurant – Magazaki tis Thodoras, a restaurant located at the edge of the village, right on the water, serving authentic and fresh food straight from the sea, excellent for fish and seafood lovers.

Pirgos Mavromichali – A beautiful 4-star hotel located in an 18th-century tower and situated right on the seafront in Limeni.
Mavromichalai – A boutique hotel located in a traditional stone building in the heart of Limeni. All rooms offer stunning sea views.

Peloponnese for travelers - Areopoli

Areopoli is a small and incredibly picturesque town, with traditional stone houses characteristic of the Mani region. Unlike other villages, where the stone houses have been abandoned, Areopolis still has a relatively large population of almost 1,000 residents. Despite being a tourist town, Areopolis in the Peloponnese has preserved its traditional character. The narrow cobblestone streets and well-preserved houses are undoubtedly the jewels of this picturesque town. Peloponnese for travelers: Areopoli is built at an altitude of 242 meters, and is located very close to the western coast. This is a place you must visit on your trip to the Greek Peloponnese, and also a recommended place to sleep if you want to stay in a mountainous and quiet place with convenient access to the beautiful beaches around.

Gerolimenas

יירולימנס הוא כפר דייגים, אחד היפים והמסורתיים בחבל מאני. הוא נמצא על חוף הים של לקוניה ופירוש שמו הוא “נמל ישן”. בעברו שימש כנמל חשוב באזור.

כיום הכפר הוא אתר נופש מפורסם עם הרבה מסעדות מסורתיות, בתי קפה ומקומות לינה תיירותיים המושכים אליהם מספר רב של מבקרים בכל ימות השנה ובעיקר בקיץ. בכפר יש חוף ים יפהפה וצלול. תוכלו לשחות בתוך המפרץ וברקע לראות את בתי האבן היפים הנותנים תחושה של נסיעה אחורה בזמן.

25 דקות נסיעה משם נמצא חוף יפהפה שנקרא Porto Kagio ותוכלו לשלב אותו עם ביקורכם באזור פלופונס.

איפה לישון ביירולימנס?

Kyrimai Hotel – מלון 4 כוכבים יפהפה השוכן במבנה ששוחזר משנת 1870. למלון יש בריכה וחוף ים פרטי. ארוחת הבוקר במלון מוגשת על הדק בצמוד לחוף הים. מלון מומלץ מאוד למי שרוצה להנות מהאווירה האותנטית של פלופונס.

Guesthouse Laoula – בית הארחה שנמצא ממש על שפת הים. המקום ידידותי לבעלי חיים! כל חדרי האירוח כוללים מרפסת, חלקן צופות לים.

וטיה Vathia - עיירת הרפאים של פלופונס

ואתיה הוא אולי הכפר המצולם ביותר במאני. יישוב מסורתי היושב על ראש גבעה, מוקף בעצי זית. הנופים של הים האגאי הנשקפים ממנו פשוט מרהיבים.

מגדלי האבן של ואתיה הוקמו במאה ה-18 והמאה ה-19 בעיקר במטרה להגן על האנשים במהלך התקפות העותמאנים ופולשים נוספים.

לאחר מלחמת העולם השנייה, רבים מהתושבים המקומיים עברו לערים הגדולות יותר. בשנות ה-80 ממשלת יוון עמדה בראש פרויקט שיקום כדי שאנשים מכל העולם יוכלו ליהנות מהכפר.

בהליכה לאורך הרחובות המרוצפים, תגלו שאמנם רוב הבתים נטושי,ם אך חלקם מאוכלסים, ואם תסתכלו היטב, תראו סימני חיים.

בדרך למונמבסיה עצירה בספינת דימיטריוס (Dimitrios shipwreck)

נקודת עצירה מושלמת בדרך מחבל מאני למונמבסיה. ראוי לציין כי אפילו שווה לקפוץ אליה במיוחד אם אתם ישנים באזור. זוהי ספינה טרופה שעומדת פה כבר כ-40 שנה ובינתיים נשחקה, החלידה וקיבלה עיטורי גרפיטי מהמקומיים, וזה הופך אותה לבולטת בנוף, ובינינו, גם אתר מעולה לתמונות, מלמעלה ומקרוב! מספרים שהיא שימשה להובלת סיגריות לא חוקיות בין טורקיה לאיטליה, אבל אם תשאלו את המקומיים תשמעו סיפור על ספינת רפאים שמקורה לא ידוע 😊

מונמבסיה Monemvasia - עיירת ציור של פלופונס

מונמבסיה זו אחת הערים הכי יפות באיזור פלופונס יוון כולה. היא ללא ספק עיירה שאתם חייבים להכניס ללו”ז פלופונס טיול.

פירוש השם מונמבסיה הוא ״דרך אחת״, וכשמה כן היא, יש רק כניסה אחת לעיירה העתיקה בכביש צר המחבר בין היבשה לבינה.

ממבט ראשוני על העיירה תראו אי גדול בתוך הים ותתקשו להבין איפה מסתתר כל היופי שדיברו עליו, אבל ברגע שתתקרבו עם הרכב, עד הנקודה שתתאפשר לכם, יהיו לכם שתי אופציות להיכנס לעיירה ואז תבינו על מה כולם מדברים :).

מאיפה מתחילים את הטיול במונמבסיה פלופונס?

הדרך הראשונה היא הדרך בה רוב האנשים נכנסים אליה, והיא משער האבן הראשי והמרשים. הדרך השנייה היא קצת נסתרת, והיא בעיניי המומלצת יותר. לפני שתגיעו לשער מצד שמאל, יהיו לכם מדרגות העולות לתוך ההר בשביל בתוך הטבע. אם תטפסו משם במשך דקות בודדות, תגיעו לכניסה העליונה המובילה למצודה העתיקה, ממנה נשקף נוף מרהיב על כל העיירה.

אני ממליצה בחום להתחיל את הסיור בעיירה הנמצאת בחצי האי פלופונס משם, להתרשם מהמבצר העתיק והנופים הנגלים ממנו ולהגיע עד לכנסייה העתיקה שהמראה שלה עוצר נשימה.

כשתגיעו לקצה תתחילו לרדת בין הסמטאות הצרות והקסומות לכיוון מרכז העיירה, שם תוכלו למצוא מסעדות, ברים וחנויות בוטיקיות.

מסעדות ובתי קפה מומלצים במונמבסיה

מסעדת Kanoni – אל תפספסו את הפסטה המקומית שלהם. מנה מדהימה המוגשת עם סלק ושמנת חמוצה.

בר בשם Enetiko – בר עם מוזיקה מעולה, אווירה טוב ונוף מדהים, יש שם אחלה קוקטיילים וקינוחים מעולים. בהחלט כדאי לבקר אם הגעתם אל פלופונס.

בית קפה בשם Malvasia Cafe ממוקם בקצה ההר בצמוד לחומות עם נוף יפהפה, מומלץ להזמין בו פרדו קפוצ’ינו.

איפה לישון במונמבסיה?

בתוך העיירה יש בתי מלון בוטיקיים מדהימים המתאימים לאלו שלא אכפת להם להיגרר קצת עם מזוודות, כי לתוך העיירה אין אפשרות להיכנס עם רכב. אנחנו ישנו במלון מקסים וממש מומלץ מול העיירה, עם חניה פרטית, חדרים גדולים, ארוחת בוקר מעולה וג’קוזי ספא לאורחים. המלון נקרא ALKINOI RESORT AND SPA

אם אתם מגיעים לפלופונס לכמה ימים ורוצים לשלב את החופשה עם אי יווני אותנטי ומקסים, אני ממליצה לכם לנסוע לנמל Neapoli שנמצא חצי שעה נסיעה ממונמבסיה, ולעלות על מעבורת של שעה בלבד לכיוון האי קיתירה.

Gerakas - הפיורד היחיד ביוון

נמל Gerakas ממוקם ליד Monemvasia (כ-30 דקות נסיעה במכונית). כאן תראו את ה-“פיורד” היחיד של יוון המהווה נקודת מפגש לציפורים נודדות ומינים נדירים אחרים של בעלי חיים. מדובר על כפר ציורי וקטן על הנמל עם טברנות דגים מסורתיות על שפת המים.

המקומות שכדאי לעצור בהם בדרך לנאפפליו Nafplio

הדרך היפה ביותר לנסוע בה ממונמבסיה לנאפפליו היא הדרך העוברת בסמוך לחוף. דרך זו כוללת נסיעה מדהימה של 3 שעות עם נופים מרהיבים. מכל צד תראו מצוקים מטורפים באפור ואדום ועצים משגעים בכל גווני הירוק הקיימים, או בעונת השלכת בצבעי אש מטריפים.

חוף Tyros הוא חוף יפהפה ורחב עם מים צלולים. תוכלו לעצור בו בדרך ולהנות מהמים הנעימים ומבתי הקפה הפזורים לאורך החוף של פלופונס.

עוד נמל חמוד בדרך נקרא Astros עם מבחר מסעדות ובתי קפה בצמוד לים. מקום טוב לעצור בו בדרך ליהנות מהאווירה הנעימה.

חוף נוסף יפה שתוכלו לעצור בו בדרך נקרא Kiveri Beach.

אם אין לכם מספיק זמן ואתם חייבים לבחור חוף אחד לעצור בו, אל תפספסו את החוף המרהיב Tigani Beach. מדובר על מפרץ יפהפה עם מים טורקיז שנראים כמו החופים בתאילנד. מחנים את הרכב בצד הכביש ויורדים רגלית במשך כ-5 דקות. בעונת הרחצה החוף מסודר עם כסאות שיזוף, קיוסק ואפשרויות לספורט ימי. אם תגיעו שלא בעונת התיירות, תצטרכו להביא איתכם שמיכה, מגבות וכמה נשנושים שיהיו.

לאונידיו Leonidio ומנזר אלונה (Monastery of Panagia Elona)

כפר שעולים אליו לרגל, ומגיעים אליו גם הרבה אנשים שתחביבם הוא טיפוס הרים ומצוקים. גם אם אתם פחות בעניין של אקסטרים, המצוקים האדומים מרשימים מאוד. ישנו גם נהר העובר במרכז העיר, ותוכלו לשבת לקפה כדי לחלק את הנסיעה ולהתכונן לכך שמכאן ועד נאפפליו הדרך המשקיפה על כל המפרצונים והים פשוט עוצרת נשימה. לספורטיביים ביניכם – דעו שיש טיול רגלי של כ-15 ק”מ בין ליאונידיו למנזר אלונה. בין הצוקים שוכן לו מנזר הנשים (שפגשנו בו רק גברים, לכו תבינו) עם נוף לקניון והנדסת מבנה שלא תיאמן… אנו תוהים איך בנו אותה בכלל, ולבטח כשזה היה לפני מאות שנים בפרט.

נאפפליו Nafplio - הפנינה של חצי האי פלופונס

עם המצודות המרהיבות שלה, מרכז העיר המקסים שלה והנמל הקטן והציורי שלה, נאפפליו היא באופן לא מפתיע אחת העיירות המתויירות ביותר באיזור פלופונס. בעיירה זו ישנן סמטאות קסומות, חנויות, מסעדות, בתים צבעוניים וברים המוצעים לאורך רחובותיה העתיקים והיפים.

נאפפליו היא העיירה שבעבר שימשה כעיר הבירה של יוון, וכיום נותרה כעיירה תיירותית המתאימה לביקור בכל עונות השנה. זו אחת העיירות הציוריות ביותר ביוון, והיא נמצאת פחות משעתיים נסיעה מאתונה. העיירה נשארה במשך זמן רב תחת השפעה ונציאנית, ולכן לא יהיה הזוי אם תרגישו שאתם בכלל באיזה כפר איטלקי ולא ביוון.

איפה לטייל בנאפפליו פלופונס?

בנאפפליו פלופונס הכי כיף ללכת לאיבוד בין הסמטאות הציוריות ולאורך הנמל שם תוכלו ליהנות משמש מלטפת ואוויר נעים.

העיירה מוקפת ב-3 מצודות עתיקות. לשתיים מהן תוכלו להגיע עם הרכב או ברגל. אחת נמצאת בלב הים ונכון לעכשיו סגורה למבקרים.

מצודת פלמידי – אם אתם אמיצים, אני בפירוש ממליצה לכם לעלות רגלית למצודה, גם אם זה אומר לטפס 900 מדרגות! זה לחלוטין שווה את זה. הנוף לאורך הדרך עוצר נשימה והעליה אינה קשה אם עושים אותה בקצב איטי. כמובן שמי שאינו מעוניין או יכול לטפס רגלית, ישנה אפשרות להגיע למצודה גם עם הרכב.

טירת Acronafplia – אקרונאופיה למרבה הצער לא נשתמרה כמו טירת פלמידי, אבל היא לגמרי שווה ביקור, בעיקר בשל הנופים הנהדרים הנשקפים ממנה משני הכיוונים, האחד לנאפפליו והשני למפרץ הקסום ארגוליס Argolic Gulf.

Tigani Beach – שעה נסיעה ואתם באחד החופים המדהימים בפלופונס. מי טורקיז שזהים לחופים במלדיביים.

איפה לישון בנאפפליו פלופונס?

בנאפפליו יש מבחר לא קטן של מקומות לינה מעולים. אני ממליצה בחום על מלון בוטיק חדש ויפהפה בשם Origami שנפתח באוגוסט 2021.

המלון ממוקם כ-5 דקות הליכה מנמל נאפפליו והוא בחירה מצויינת למי שמגיע לעיר ורוצה להתפנק. כמו כן, ויש חניה חינמית בצמוד למלון, שזה פלוס!

מדובר על אתר ארכיאולוגי מרשים מאוד בחצי האי פלופונס, שהוא גם אתר מורשת עולמי של אונסק”ו. גולת הכותרת שלו היא התיאטרון העצום שהשתמר בצורה מדהימה. ממש במרכז הבמה, אם תעמדו ותגידו משהו, תשמעו את הד קולכם חוזר אליכם מכל עבר (אם תזוזו מטר הצידה האפקט נעלם, בחיי!). אם תעלו עד לראש המושבים תרוויחו את חוויית הקהל, ששומע הכל מכל פינה עקב הצלחה הנדסית מסחררת של אדריכלות התיאטרון, וגם את הנוף שברקע. באתר תמצאו גם מוזיאון עם פסלים וכותרות יפות שהשתמרו מהמקדש, ותוכלו ללכת בין הריסות בית המרפא של אסקלפיוס שהיה מרכז ריפוי חשוב ומהולל אליו עלו לרגל מקרוב ומרחוק כדי לרפא את הגוף ואת הנפש.
